"Larry's Way....Mellow and Impromptu"
Read the review from Anthony Bez. Mr. Bez has published articles and reviews in Soundboard Magazine, the publication of the Guitar Foundation of America, Guitar Review and NYlon Review. He is currently on the faculty of the Hudson School and the New York Music School:
I just got a listen to the Larry Luger Trio CD. If you don't know, Larry is a dedicated and effusive proponent of jazz guitar and jazz music for more than a generation here in New York City. You can find him numerous times per week playing solo and with ensemble in hotels, bars and restaurants across the city. This latest CD, from Cexton Records, featuring David Shaich on bass and Mike Hashim on sax, is a sweet tribute to the genre Larry loves so much. Larry really has a classic tone and he and his cohorts support and enhance each other's sensibility of great jazz throughout the eight cuts here.
Starting with a blues, “That's Your Red Wagon” gets the listener on the same page as the musicians with ease and grace with Mr. Shaich pumping out the walking bass line and a superb statement of theme and improvisation by Mr. Hashim. Mr. Luger's solos identify him clearly if you know his style. He punctuates his lines with cascades of rapid picking bursts. He once described his personality as driving and emotional...and that when you listen to guitarists you hear their personalities. This is Larry's inimitable style.
“Falling In Love with Love” sees some wonderful improvisational technique over this standard with a featured bass solo. Kudos to Mr. Shaich for his to-the-point style. He does not let up for the whole CD.
Other standards on this album are an upbeat “This Will Be My Shining Hour.” Again, the respect for the music and the genre that these gentlemen possess shines here. Beautiful solo work by Mike Hashim with wonderful tone and shaped lines. “You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To” at a relaxed pace puts you right where the title tells you. “Exactly Like You” ends up the set nicely with soulful solos from each of the players.
Did I mention there are three original tunes here composed by Larry Luger? Well, yes there are and they fit precisely into the third, fifth and seventh spots on this CD. They are perfectly nestled in the arms of these aforementioned classic standards. Perfectly named “Nuts and Raisins,” “Change in Pennies,” and “Larry's Blues in C minor” exhibit an expert degree of compositional ability and an easy familiarity with a favorite genre. That favors playing in the pocket.
In a conversation with Larry recently about the state of music today, he told me he was proud that he could get together with a couple of great players and lay down all of these tracks in a matter of hours. Indeed, it is something to be proud about.
